A Colorful Salon Makeover Emphasizes the Stylist’s Art

Moving from their existing location to a new building, Plane Jane Salon wanted to maintain their aesthetic and capitalize on the salon’s specialization of expert color services in their new space. With an inherently unique shape, the new layout required some accommodations to maximize functionality. The clean, contemporary design has a touch of industrialism, including acoustical “airplanes” that fly through the space. Using a color scheme of pinks, greens, black and gold, the design allowed for unusual accents, such as green and gold grout and tile resembling multicolor paint splatter at the color bar, to provide playful pops of color.

A reception and waiting area was designed to include shelving for retail and a graphic photo wall to show off their clients’ vibrant hair treatments for salon portfolios and social media marketing. The styling stations, 11 in all, were custom designed to be simple but effective, resembling easels to promote the concept of stylist as artist. The easels have a long mirror and counter, a storage area for equipment, and personal carts for each stylist, making the stations versatile and easily cleaned to be used by others. The space has storefront windows along one side, allowing passersby to view the artistry inside. The shop also includes a color bar showcasing the three main manufacturers the salon uses, four hair wash stations with shelving for additional retail and storage, a break room, and restrooms featuring lively wallcoverings and tile.
