Embracing Residential Streetscapes with a Two-Car Garage Cottage Style Home

The two car garage on this home is not an add-on or an afterthought, it is included and detailed as much as, if not more so, the rest of the house. In the overall site plan, the garage is paced to the front of the property, rotated to keep the vehicle entry doors from facing the street; a hardscaped forecourt is created behind garden walls. The massing of the garage is a story and a half, a compromise that provides needed square footage for a home office above, while making a sensitive presence to the street. A tripartite material use of stone, stucco and vertical board and batten siding also helps to break down the volume of the garage and provide visual interest to the neighborhood.
