Historically Respectful 21st Century Renovation

As a “Contributing Resource” within the Chevy Chase Village Historic District, this two-and-a-half story turn-of-the-century 1900’s Colonial Revival-style house required a discrete addition to improve its usable area without compromise to its historic exterior character. GTM Architects worked closely with the Historic Preservation authority to accomplish the property owner’s objectives while maintaining harmony with its surrounding neighborhood.

After a thorough exterior restoration and introduction of a rear yard facing two-story addition, the home now has an open-concept Kitchen, Family and Breakfast area, two-car garage with separate mudroom entry and a back-stair to the 2nd floor master bedroom suite and full-sized laundry room. The renovation removed an aging and outdated single-story rear yard garage, kitchen and laundry addition, which cleared the way for a new plan much more attuned to a 21st century lifestyle. This open floor plan provides a first-floor sight line from the front door through the house to the rear addition and out into the back yard.

The new floor plan layout also allowed for considerable basement-level living space below the new addition, while allocating the existing low-headroom basement area to storage. Other renovation enhancements include the addition of individual bathrooms to each of the 2nd floor bedroom suites as well as the 3rd floor attic en-suite. In completion, this historically-sensitive renovation added 3,014 sf to the house for a total of 6,667 finished sf with seven bedrooms, five full and one half baths, and an attached two-car garage.
