School Expansion to Match Existing Campus Architecture

GTM|Architects’ project for Mater Dei School required the expansion of an existing one-story middle school building, adding a total of 3,850 sf of new building area and classroom space, as well as the renovation of 7,800 sf of existing classroom areas at this Bethesda, MD campus. The new program was designed to accommodate a large locker room area, five new classrooms, a handicapped accessible restroom, teacher’s offices, utility room and a foyer with an elevator.

The design intent of the project was to seamlessly blend the new addition with the existing campus architecture through the use of a triple gabled façade, painted brick, timber frame porches, a patio, and a tower element that is composed to seamlessly fit between existing classrooms and the School’s Chapel.
