Silver Spring, MD
GTM was retained to modernize a medical office building main lobby and elevator corridor in Silver Spring, MD. The goal was to create a design that would appeal aesthetically and functionally to the tenants’ patients, many of whom are elderly and utilize wheelchairs for mobility. The challenge was to brighten up the dark lobby and elevator corridor that was clad in dark slate panels with polished brass accents and a red brick floor. The main lobby floor was upgraded with a contemporary, white, slip resistant porcelain tile laid in an ashlar pattern with insets of walk-off carpet tile to aid in maintaining safety from the outside elements. The dark slate cladded walls were replaced with a combination of white back-painted glass and 16’ high, glossy white, textured panels. The raised ceiling design was simplified with the removal of several tiers of polished brass trim and replaced with an elegant, serpentine chandelier. To balance the new, bright, white finishes, the space was warmed up with walnut wood clad columns and dropped ceiling bulkhead. The security desk was custom designed using a durable, porcelain tile veneer with a quartz desktop and laminate storage. The building storefront was upgraded with a clear anodized aluminum finish and new glass doors. A new, electronic, interactive directory was installed to improve way finding and communication. Finally, a small seating area was added to complete the space.
