Silver Spring, MD
A full-scale transformation was made of a 1970's mid-century modern home which sits on the largest lot in the traditional Silver Spring neighborhood of Woodside. The clients wanted to address the home’s existing disjointed layout and introduce a cohesive redesign that respected the architectural legacy while supporting contemporary family life. Design challenges included integrating new rooflines and volumes that complimented the existing architecture while avoiding repetition. Key solutions included a back stair tower, which improved circulation, views and light through the rear of the home. The existing central axis was retained and extended with a relocated kitchen. The visual axis now connects the front stairs, living room, kitchen and continues through the exterior pool. The exterior design included thoughtful materials such as painted brick and vertical sapele mahogany siding further establishing the architectural language that unifies the original and expanded areas. The rear yard pool and lounge areas were tiered for multiple levels of entertaining spaces including the raised spa and infinity edge pool aligning with the central axis.
