Washington, DC
Located at The Wharf in Washington, DC, Urban Roast is an immersive hospitality destination designed to transform with the seasons. Layered arches, contemporary finishes, and a neutral material palette create a refined backdrop for elaborate seasonal installations. An open-grid ceiling system and integrated infrastructure allows décor to be installed, removed, and reconfigured without altering the underlying architecture. This flexible approach allows the restaurant’s identity to continually evolve while maintaining a cohesive sense of place.
The restaurant includes a variety of seating environments, from intimate booths to open dining tables and an elevated central bar that serves as a visual and social focal point. Operable windows connect the bar and interior dining room to an expansive outdoor patio, where a firepit and garden create a year-round gathering place along the waterfront.
Changes in floor elevation are integrated into the arrival experience, with a ramp creating a gradual transition from the host stand into the dining area while reinforcing the prominence of the central bar. Daylight, fresh air, waterfront views, durable materials, reused fixtures, and layered lighting strategies further support the project’s emphasis on well-being and longevity, while individual all-gender restroom stalls with a shared handwashing area support an inclusive guest experience.
