District of Columbia Government Training Facility

GTM Architects was tasked to design a new training facility for a DC Governmental Agency, one of 17 agencies under the District of Columbia’s public safety cluster. The project involved the renovation of a 33,113 sf warehouse building with 10 full sized loading docks and 2,678 sf of mezzanine space. The project involved significant interior demolition of existing interior walls, existing slabs, and miscellaneous built-in refrigeration equipment. The exterior of the building will remain intact with new windows, miscellaneous exterior repair and a new front entrance design.

GTM’s goal was to create an environment that was exciting, warm and welcoming, while also utilizing durable materials. Special features include a distressed wood wall in the reception area flanked by a custom desk, wall graphics that illustrate the message of the DC Governmental Agency, flexibility in spaces used for training including a simulation cell, and durable but unique restrooms/locker rooms.

Initial challenges included reconciling a variety of slab heights, locations of existing utility services and access to the new main entrance. From an interior layout perspective, the building’s interior served a multitude of purposes, from training to physical fitness to office space. The population of the building would vary depending on the programs’ cycle. To solve this issue, there is a clearly defined area for full time staff including office space, conference room, break room, storage and restrooms. The interior renovation program included: open office areas, classrooms, training and simulations room, weight and cardio areas, men & women’s locker rooms, staff break area, and warehouse and storage space. The trainees and full time staff benefit from the balance of the new training facility.
