Located in the desirable Cleveland Park neighborhood, this historic renovation included a top-to-bottom overhaul and two-story 682 sf rear addition designed to match the home’s original 1917 Georgian architectural style. Substantial structural modifications provided the needed space for functional rooms and an updated layout, resulting a 6,700 sf seven-bedroom home with a sophisticated and modern sensibility.
The client’s main objective was to achieve increased ceiling heights on both levels, with an expanded Kitchen and Owner’s Suite to include a larger en-suite bath. The renovation also expanded the existing garage, with a new mudroom/laundry room entry leading into the house. An improved stair layout opened up the first floor for better flow, providing a direct path from the front door to the Kitchen and Breakfast Room and continuing into the Family Room. A new bedroom, bathroom and extra laundry room were added on the second floor, and a wine room was created in the basement level.
Throughout this expansive renovation, several unique design solutions were implemented. To improve access to the home’s new rooftop deck—which offers views of the National Cathedral—access was added via a ships ladder leading to a motorized skylight roof hatch. Tucked in behind the unique parapet wall design of the existing roof line, the new roof deck was intentionally located to be hidden from view from the street. Outside, a massive linear wood-burning fireplace with integrated outdoor kitchen and entertaining space was designed to offer an outdoor dining area beneath a steel and wood pergola with ceiling fans.
