GTM Principal Mark Kaufman and Senior Project Designer Stephen Santos were both featured in a recent ArchitectureDC article highlighting the renovation of a mid-century modern home in Silver Spring. The home, which was originally designed by the late architect Socrates Thomas Stathes, is currently owned by a young couple that was struggling to make it work for their family.
"It was already a beautiful house with good bones and sloping roofs," Kaufman is quoted saying. "Our goals were to keep but enhance the mid-century style, improve functionality, and sort out the circulation. The geometries were so strong in the house and we took our lead from them."
One of the architects' most consequential design decision was to enclose most of the breezeway to create a new foyer with a clear street entrance. The team also relocated the kitchen, transformed the original breezeway into a front porch, and converted the former kitchen into a large pantry, office, and second staircase.
