Expansion and Renovation of an Historic Victorian Structure

The renovation and expansion of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School in Northwest Washington, DC entailed a complete overhaul of the original 6,030 sf Victorian building. GTM’s new design added 1,420 sf of space to accommodate the seventh and eighth grade classes and the interiors were modernized throughout.

Among the challenges of this project was keeping the historic character of the building while still upgrading it to current safety and accessibility codes. The renovation comprised a new library, common room, four classrooms, an art room, music room, science lab, as well as administrative offices with a conference room. The extensive process involved expert witness testimony at zoning hearings in addition to the documentation for the existing building, schematic design, construction documents, interior design and furniture selection.
